My abuela, Judith, was always a woman who dressed up no matter the occasion. Her face decorated with eyeshadows, blush, and her tattooed liner. She loved lace and vibrant color. After she passed, I felt the need to express my grieving with the one outlet that speaks to me the most: fashion. Clothing is my second language. It perpetuates stories and provides insight into ones mind more than anything else can. I believe in its power and in its language.
I was dreaming in fabrics and swatches, and I had hoped to commemorate her life with an outfit that would help me say everything I wish I could have said to my grandma before she passed. All of the conversations I never had with her in Spanish, all of the tortillas she created for me in her magical skillet, I wanted all these feelings encapsulated in wearable art form. I felt as though it was necessary to continue her voice and Mexican culture in this garment.
I collaborated with a small business owner and fashion designer, @shone.co, to create what was in my mind. And with her needle and vegan/sustainable yarn, I was able to feel a better connection to my grandmother although she’s now in Heaven. Thank you to Shone Designs for this beautiful piece of art. This one is for Grandma Judy. I love you.
